Tiny Token Empires

Today's roundup is presented by Tiny Token Empires from HeroCraft. This game has an interesting mix of genres: the city and empire building is reminiscent of a Civilization-style game set in 2000 B.C. But the way that your empire expands is kind of like Risk... until you get into the actual battles, which play out as a swapping puzzle game. It's an intriguing and humorous combination of strategy and puzzle elements, with HeroCraft's usual spit and polish. There are five individual campaigns in the $4.99 game, with three difficulty settings for new, intermediate, and advanced strategy players.

Final Fantasy IV

Just like Final Fantast III before it, FFIV is getting a fancy re-release on Android. This isn't the old pixelated version you may remember from the SNES days, it's the Nintendo DS 3D remake, complete with a revamped battle system, new graphics (decent for Android) and a new touch interface. It's super expensive, but those jaw-dropping pre-rendered cinematics that Square likes to shove into its RPGs might just be worth it.
--
"FINAL FANTASY IV" has finally come to the Android. The title first debuted in 1991 as the fourth installment in the FINAL FANTASY series. Wildly popular thanks to its unique characters and dramatic storylines, it went on to be ported to many different platforms. FINAL FANTASY IV was the first title to introduce the Active Time Battle (ATB) system, which has become synonymous with the series. It also saw the introduction of the Augment system, which enabled the transfer of abilities from other characters and gave players an edge in battles.

Quadropus Rampage

If an octopus had four tentacles instead of eight, it would be called a quadropus. If that creature got seriously pissed off and decided to kill everything in a leveled, roguelike brawler, you'd have Quadropus Rampage. This twin-stick isometric fighter lets you assign different weapons and abilities to each of the hero's four limbs, getting through as many waves and bosses as you can before your inevitable defeat. The game is free, with the usual IAP upsell.
--
Quadropus Rampage is an Endless Roguelike that casts you, the player, as an enraged, four-legged cephalopod. It is your quest to reach the bottom of the ocean and destroy Pete, the evil god of the sea, before his army of abyssal creatures can overtake the ocean.

• Perfect fusion of roguelike and brawler - Hit enemies in their stupid faces

The Forest of Doom

Combining Tin Man Games' signature Choose Your Own Adventure/tabletop roleplaying games with a Dungeons & Dragons-style storyline seems like such an obvious move, it's amazing that they haven't done it already. Like most of the game-books that came before it, The Forest of Doom is expensive, but well worth it for fans of these unique niche. Unfortunately, the digital die in the game still have a pedestrian six sides.
--

Quell Memento is an impressive sequel to the original Quell, which throws in quite a bit of story for good measure. Sphero is that unique ball toy-controller you may have seen rolling around various trade show floors. The latest game to take advantage of it throws in the oh-so-popular zombie element (why does it always have to be zombies?) for some augmented-reality fun. You'll have to have a Sphero to play this top-down, dual-stick/ball shooter. It's a good thing that it's free.
--

Ticket to Ride

Ticket To Ride is a successful train-based board game, which has made a small splash on iOS. It took them more than a year to bring this title over to Android, which is a bit of an insult, but those who love the original game will be willing to forgive the creators this slight. You can play against the computer to get the longest continuous train route, or play against up to four human opponents instead. The game is surprisingly expensive at $7.
--
Ticket to Ride® for Android is a cross-country train adventure playable online, in which you will collect and play train cards to claim railway routes connecting cities listed on Destination Tickets you will receive at the start of each game. The longer your routes, the more points you'll earn. But be careful not to find yourself blocked off by your opponents, as each Destination ticket not fulfilled will cost you dearly.

Ku: Shroud of the Morrigan

8-bit style is all well and good, but Android devices are powerhouses - let's see some great graphics, even in 2D! Ku takes the old Zelda style and infuses it with some breathtaking character and environmental design, all based on Celtic mythology with a healthy dose of steampunk. There's an overarching story that you might find interesting, and the interface is decidedly mobile-friendly as well.
--

You play as young Kú, who must venture out in to a broken and strange world for the first time. Battlestone™

Zynga is tired of the card and board game grind, and ready to join its contemporaries with more modern titles. Battlestone is a dungeon crawler at heart, though the swiping interface makes it more mobile-friendly than most. Collect hero units and grind on computer-controlled baddies, or duke it out with real people in multiplayer. But you'd better hope they haven't sunk a ton of money into Zynga's usual pay-to-win IAP scenario.

Gangstar City

Mix Sim City-style urban management with the top-down carnage of the original Grand Theft Auto games, and you get Gameloft's latest entry in its home-grown Gangstar crime series. It's a strange mix (and unusually creative for Gameloft) but it looks compelling - you take over territory with a mix of real estate business savvy and good old-fashioned violence. Beware of the usual free-to-play trappings.

Twin Blades features some heavy anime influence, but its gameplay is pure 16-bit beat-em-up. You'll improve your skills and equipment as you mow through enemies and bosses, and the stages morph according to a real-time game clock, opening new areas and bad guys. Play Store reviews report awesome 2D graphics, but controls which are sometimes cumbersome.

10 Must-Have Android Apps You Need Now

There are more than 700,000 apps in the Google Play store. You don't need every one of them, but you do need to download these 10 must-have apps right now.
10 Must-Have Android Apps You Need Now (update)

When I first created my Must-Have Android list two years ago, the Android Market was still playing catch up to the Apple's App Store. Now, a renamed and revamped, Google Play offers more apps than Apple. Developers are increasingly launching new apps on Android first and then porting them to iPhone. Clearly, a lot has changed. So has my list of essential applications.

A few disclaimers before we get into the list. First, these are *essential* downloads. If you want the100 Best Android Apps, we have a list for that as well. These are my picks for the *first* 10 apps you should download. And yes, I had to leave some really great apps off the list.

I talked to lot of the guys in labs about these picks, but I should be clear my opinions are sometimes different from the analysts. I would have probably made SnapSeed an Editors' Choice, but Jeff Wilson has some reservations. This is my personal list so it shows some of my idiosyncrasies.
For example, when I think of "essential apps," I don't think games. Angry Birds and Temple Run 2 are fantastic time killers, but you already know that. They will get a million downloads whether I list them here or not.
I've also chosen not to include what I consider no-brainer Google apps, such as Google Maps. As far as I'm concerned, Google Maps is a gimme. If you are an Android user, you should already have it installed. And, this goes for the native Gmail client as well. Google+ and Google Music are neat apps, but they have a way to go before I would call them essential. And while I love the new Google Chrome Beta for Android, it isn't available on enough devices for me to recommend.
This list of essentials is also light on social media apps—no Facebook or Twitter clients made the list. I'm a big Twitter user (@dancosta), but the truth is, most people probably don't need to tweet from their phone. Again, not essential.
All of these apps are free, but many have more powerful paid versions. If you like them, kick them some cash to keep them around.
